Listen to Your Hunger Cues

Listen to your body -- it will tell you when to eat and when you are full. Pay attention and take control!

 
 

Hunger


Use this step-by-step process to help you understand your body's dietary needs and cravings.

Step #1: Hungry?

  • YES - What do I want? What does my body need? Eat something and enjoy it!!
  • NO - What do I need?
    • comfort
    • relaxation
    • sleep
    • stress release
    • escape
    • other
    • don't know
  • If you're not hungry and want to eat anyway, go to Step # 2.


Step #2: What do I want to eat?

  • Something healthy? Have that choice available, but don't force yourself to make this your choice.
  • Something satisfying?


Step #3: Eat!!

  1. Take a portion and put the container away.
  2. Take the portion to a comfortable place.
  3. Center yourself (take a few deep breathes and focus on the food you are eating).
  4. Enjoy your eating experience.


 Step #4: How do you feel?

  • Satisfied - good for you!
  • Still unsettled (go to Step #1) .
  • Guilty and frustrated (go to Step #5).


Step #5: Get on with your life.

That was one snack, let go of guilt! It takes 3500 extra calories to gain a pound!
